Unblocking your Impactful Career - Head, Heart and Hand Framework
1. The Head, Heart and Hand Framework for Impactful Careers
Creating your impactful career isn't simply a matter of choosing the "right" cause area on paper. It requires a balance of three genuinely different categories of questions - which can fall into the dimensions of your Head, your Heart, and your Hand.
🧠 Your Head asks: will working on this problem actually lead to real-world impact? These uncertainties are resolved through research and analysis. Questions here may look like:
Is this problem important, neglected, and tractable?
Do I know enough about the real-world state of this problem?
Does this approach target the right bottleneck?
❤️ Your Heart asks: does this path motivate, energise, and sustain me? These uncertainties are resolved through honest self-reflection. Questions here may look like:
Do I enjoy this day-to-day, or just the idea of it?
Does this align with who I want to become?
What belief about myself might be limiting my options?
🤝 Your Hand asks: have I actually tested this in reality? These uncertainties can only be resolved through action and experimentation. Ask yourself:
Who is doing this work that I could talk to?
What's the smallest version of this I can try?
What would a real mini-experiment of this look like?
Why all three dimensions matter
Having just one or two out of three can often be a key reason why people are stuck in their impactful journeys:
Head ∩ Heart, no Hand - you know what matters and feel genuinely aligned, but you haven't tested any of it in reality yet.You do a ton of thinking and planning, but nothing actually happens out in the world. The risk here is staying theoretical indefinitely, mistaking a good plan for real progress.
Head ∩ Hand, no Heart - you're doing rigorous, genuinely impactful work, but it may be quietly draining you. The risk here is burnout that looks like success from the outside, but isn't sustainable in the long run.
Heart ∩ Hand, no Head - you're motivated and active, but not actually sure any of it is impactful. The risk here is staying busy without it actually making an important difference, and many well-intentioned people fall into exactly this trap.
All three together - you're doing impactful work with tangible impact, and energised by both what you're doing and how you're doing it!
A key thing to remember is that your impactful career isn’t a fixed destination - it’s something you can continue to shape, refine, and build throughout your journey. At different points, you may be blocked on different things!
2. What is my actual blocker?
If you feel stuck on your career direction right now, it's worth asking: is this actually a Head problem, a Heart problem, or a Hand problem? From the inside, all three can feel identical, they all just show up as "I don't know what to do." But they benefit from completely different responses.
A Head blocker may benefit from more research, reading, and analysis. Ask: what do I not yet understand?
A Heart blocker responds to reflection, and sometimes simply to naming a feeling out loud rather than trying to solve it. Ask: what do I need to reflect on? What emotion am I avoiding?
A Hand blocker responds to actually doing something - rather than purely thinking or feeling alone. This may be actions that can give you more information that you lack, and can’t gain from your desk.
Why finding the right blocker matters
It's easy to default to whichever response feels most comfortable or familiar to you (i.e. just reading more or doing more research), and mistake that for progress. A common trap: treating a Heart or Hand blocker as if it were a Head blocker, doing more research when what you actually need is a conversation, or an honest hour of reflection. If you've been "researching" the same decision for weeks without it resolving, it's worth asking honestly whether you're actually stuck somewhere else entirely.
Here is a few examples of what this can look like and why it matters:
Applying Head to a Hand blocker: you've read three articles on what it's like to work in AI policy and feel like you understand the field reasonably well, but you've never actually spoken to someone doing that work or tried a small piece of it yourself. Reading about a job is not the same information as doing five hours of it, and the most beneficial next step here may be to take on a small project or speak to someone in the field!
Applying Heart to a Head blocker: you journal for an hour about whether biosecurity "feels right" for you, but your actual open question is a factual one, whether biosecurity policy work is more talent-constrained than technical biosecurity research right now. This uncertainty would be best served by researching and asking people who'd know.
Applying Head to a Heart blocker: you've read every 80,000 Hours career review on offer, built spreadsheets comparing cause areas, and you're still stuck, because the real issue isn't a lack of information but may be an emotional blocker, such as imposter syndrome or not feeling good enough. No amount of additional research or reading would be able to solve this, and this may be best explored by exploring your limiting beliefs, talking honestly with a close friend or therapist, or reflecting on what is really making the decision feel difficult.
3. Examples & Resources for Different Blockers
For this section, we’ll provide an overview of different next steps you could take based on what your blockers may be. This list is not exhaustive and meant to be used just as a jumping off point and for you to see what resonates!
🧠 Head Blockers
Best resolved through research and analysis. Signs you may be blocked by a head-related uncertainty:
Unsure whether your problem area is actually important, neglected, and tractable
Unsure which of several roles or organisations would give you more leverage
Don't yet know the field's real bottlenecks, or who's doing the most promising work in it
Haven't compared your specific options against clear criteria, still stuck comparing vague categories like "policy" vs. "research"
Unsure how your existing skills would transfer or reframe into a different cause area
Potential next steps you can take to make progress on these blockers:
❤️ Heart Blockers
Best resolved through honest self-reflection, speaking to close friends/therapist, exploring your emotions. Signs you may be blocked by a heart-related uncertainty:
Imposter syndrome, "who am I to be working on something this important?"
Fear of choosing "wrong," or perfectionism that keeps you endlessly comparing rather than committing
Uncertainty about fit: you like the idea of a path, but aren't sure you'd enjoy the day-to-day reality
A limiting belief or a quiet "should" steering your choices without you fully noticing
Burnout or low energy, or uncertainty about whether this kind of work feels sustainable for you
Isolation, feeling like the people around you don't quite understand why this matters to you
A gentle four-step tool for working with Heart blockers
When you're feeling stuck, you don't always need to immediately fix the feeling. Sometimes it helps to slow down enough to understand what's going on underneath it. This four-step tool, adapted from Sophie Aengenheyster at Rethink Wellbeing, offers a simple way to do that (see full slidedeck here)
Notice - what am I feeling? Where in my body? What's the thought underneath it?
Defuse - Remember that a thought can be important without necessarily being true, and often times our struggle and pain comes from believing it as 100% true. Try: "I'm noticing I'm having the thought that..."
Flex - Create a little more space and possibility around the story you're telling yourself. What else could be true? What would I tell a friend in this exact situation?
Choose and act - You don't need to make the feeling disappear before moving forward. Ask: what matters to me here, even if the discomfort doesn't fully go away? Pick one small, values-aligned step, it doesn't need to wait for the feeling to pass.
A key thing to remember here is that you don’t have to turn every feeling into a problem to solve. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is simply become a little more curious about what's going on inside you — and give yourself some space to welcome what is there as important information & wisdom that can help you on your journey!

🤝 Hand Blockers
Best resolved through action and experimentation! Signs you may be blocked by a hand-related uncertainty:
Haven't done any informational interviews with people actually in the field
Haven't applied to a fellowship or program yet
Haven't volunteered or tried the real work hands-on

4. Conclusion: Explore and Design Your Career
By now, you have a way to name what might be holding you back - Head, Heart, or Hand - along with concrete next steps for working through each kind of blocker. But the bigger lesson is that career direction isn't something you simply think your way into. It's something you experiment your way into.
Put the pieces together, and the process is surprisingly simple:
Notice → Choose a small next step → Experiment → Reflect → Repeat
Start by noticing which of the three you're actually stuck on. Then choose one small next step from that section, try it, and pay attention to what you learn. This is Ideate, Test, and Reflect applied to one uncertainty at a time, rather than trying to solve your entire career all at once.
And importantly, this isn't a one-off exercise. It's a cycle you'll keep returning to throughout your career.
As you take action, you'll generate new information - and that information will often create new questions. Sometimes you'll stay in the same dimension; sometimes you'll move to another. You might resolve a Hand blocker by finally speaking to someone working in a field you're curious about, only to discover a deeper Heart question underneath it: Do I actually want this kind of work? Or you might gain enough real-world experience to realise that what seemed like a Heart problem was really a Head problem - you simply didn't yet know enough about the options. That's not a sign that the process isn't working. That's the process working!
Your impactful career, like your thesis, isn't a fixed destination you arrive at. It's something you keep exploring, testing, refining, and redesigning as you learn more about the world - and about yourself.
